Islamic State cornered in Mosul as Iraq prepares victory celebrations
Islamic State fighters were battling to hold on to the last few streets under their control in the Old City of Mosul on Monday, in what looked like a hopeless last stand in their former stronghold.
In fierce fighting, Iraqi army units forced the insurgents back, cornering them in a shrinking rectangle no more than 300 meters (yards) wide and 500 meters long by the Tigris river, according to a map published by the military media office.
Smoke covered parts of the Old City, rocked by air strikes and artillery salvos through the morning.
The number of Islamic State (IS) militants fighting in Mosul has dwindled from thousands at the start of the government offensive more than eight months ago to a mere couple of hundred now, according to the Iraqi military.
Reaching the Tigris would give Iraqi forces full control over the city and is expected by the end of this week. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is expected to visit Mosul to formally declare victory, and a week of nationwide celebrations is planned.
Mosul is by far the largest city ever controlled by Islamic State. It was here, nearly three years ago to the day, that it declared the founding of its “caliphate” over parts of Iraq and Syria.
The city’s fall would mark the effective end of the Iraqi half of the caliphate, although the group still controls territory west and south of Mosul, where tens of thousands of civilians live.
The group is retaliating with suicide attacks in the parts of Mosul taken by Iraqi forces and elsewhere in the country.
A suicide bomber dressed as a veiled woman killed 14 people and wounded 13 others in a displacement camp west of the capital Baghdad on Sunday, security sources said. IS claimed responsibility.
A U.S.-led international coalition is providing air and
ground support to the Mosul offensive by the Iraqi army, elite Counter Terrorism Service units and militarized police.
Thousands of people have fled the densely-populated Old City over the past 24 hours, state TV said.
But thousands more are believed trapped in the area with little food, water or medicine, and are effectively being used as human shields, according to residents who managed to escape.
Months of grinding urban warfare have displaced 900,000 people, about half the city’s pre-war population, and killed thousands, according to aid organizations.
Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has left the fighting in Mosul to local commanders and is believed to be hiding near the Iraq-Syrian border, according to U.S. and Iraqi military sources.
The group has moved its remaining command and control structures to Mayadin, in eastern Syria, U.S. intelligence sources have said.

Barzani: Kurdistan Region Seeking Independence Through Peaceful Means
Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani received on Sunday the Dutch Ambassador to Iraq Jan Valtmans and his accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, a range of topics were discussed, including bilateral relations between Kurdistan Region and Netherlands and the country’s role in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) and its military assistance for the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces.
The Dutch ambassador stated that his country is concerned about the future of the liberated areas in Iraq and the public services for the people.
Barzani thanked Netherlands for its role in the battle against terror and its support for the Peshmerga forces. He noted that the post-IS era is sensitive, explaining that if the factors that led to the rise of IS persist, serious issues will emerge.
The pair also shed light on the future of Iraq, and Barzani mentioned the factors that forced Kurdistan Region to step towards referendum for secession from Iraq.
Barzani reiterated that Kurdistan Region’s people are seeking to achieve independence and secure their rights through peaceful means.

NATO: Our support for Iraq goes beyond the phase of liberating Mosul
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the liberation of the city of Mosul from a staunch terrorist.
“When [Dahsh] is defeated and Mosul is liberated, then we need Iraqi forces capable of creating the right conditions for stability, peace and development,” Stoltenberg told a news conference on Thursday evening after the conclusion of the meeting of NATO defense ministers.
“We believe that the role of NATO in Iraq goes beyond the liberation of Mosul and the defeat of [Da’sh] and we are now working to help the Iraqi authorities in the development of security institutions.”
He stressed that military operations in Iraq were always aimed at defeating Da’ash.
Security forces are battling the last battle stations to regain control of the city of Mosul, the main bastion of Daish in Iraq since mid-2014.
Mosul is the second largest city with a population of 2 million before it fell.

Saleh’s statement is sort of like Trump’s “I hope” statement. “Like a hard curency” is not the same as “world reserve currency” in my view. I believe that, unless Planet X wipes us out in the next year or so, the dinar will become a world recognized currency. When is another question entirely. Oil rises to the highest level in two weeks
