The appeal of major countries to “recover” the money that “escaped from Iraq”
Baghdad / Sky Press – The Iraqi Foreign Ministry appealed to UN member states, led by the United States, Britain, to help Iraq recover its funds and assets under Security Council resolutions at a meeting of the sanctions committee established by Security Council resolution 1518 (2003).
Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Legal Affairs and Multilateral Relations Ambassador Hazem al-Youssafi, head of the Iraqi delegation to the meetings in New York, stressed the need to help Iraq recover its funds and financial assets.
Al-Yusufi pointed out that Iraq fights corruption and fights against it, and that the recovery of these funds is part of this battle as an illegal possession of public money, he said.
Previous reports have estimated the smuggling of prominent figures in the former Iraqi regime to billions of dollars that exceeded 75 billion dollars in conjunction with the occupation of US forces to Iraq in 2003 and the overthrow of former President Saddam Hussein.
